The common cold and flu are both diseases caused by viruses. The cold begins slowly, often with the feel of a scratchy, sore throat accompanied by sneezing, a runny nose, coughing and an elevated temperature. The flu has a sudden onset. Ill people can suffer from headache, dry cough, and may feel chilly. The symptoms worsen and become severe quickly. The temperature may reach 104flF (40flC). Nasal congestion, sore throat and muscle aches in the back and legs weaken the ill person. The recovery period may extend from days to weeks.
